MINI at the 2010 Paris Motor Show
MINI is bringing its commitment to innovation, sustainability, driving fun and individuality to the Mondial de l’Automobile 2010 in Paris. In addition to the current model line-up, a spectacular study vehicle is set to take centre stage and provide renewed evidence of the MINI design team’s outstanding expertise in the development of sustainable vehicle concepts. The MINI Scooter E Concept combines the familiar MINI feeling with CO2-free mobility on two wheels for the first time and introduces a whole new range of individualisation options. Powered by an electric motor, the MINI Scooter E Concept represents the embodiment of spontaneity and independence on city roads. Typically MINI design and drive system technology developed to deliver emission-free travel give it everything it needs to offer the driving fun associated with the brand as part of an all-new, groundbreaking package.

| The New MINI Family |
As for cars already in series production, the MINI brand is represented at the 2010 Paris Motor Show by the most attractive and diverse range of models in its history. Eye-catching design modifications, additional engine variants, a comprehensively updated selection of diesel engines and innovative new equipment items sharpen the appeal of the new MINI family in terms of design, driving fun, efficiency and individuality. With its MINI, MINI Clubman and MINI Convertible models, the world’s only maker of independently developed premium small cars will continue to boast both the most extensive and the highest-quality range in the segment.

The fourth model in the brand’s portfolio opens up new ways of experiencing the driving fun of a MINI. The MINI Countryman conquers the roads and trails outside the city limits – and wins over new target groups in the process. This is the first MINI to come with four doors and a large tailgate, as well as a versatile interior offering seating for up to five occupants. The Countryman is also the first model from the brand with a body exceeding four metres in length and which can be ordered with the ALL4 all-wheel-drive system as an option.
 |
| MINI World Rally Car |
These attributes also mean that the new model is perfectly equipped to compete in the sporting arena. It makes perfect sense, then, that the brand is about to return to the world’s rally tracks. The 2010 Paris Motor Show sees the presentation of the MINI Countryman WRC, which is ready to line up for the 2011 World Rally Championship. It marks the revival of a successful history in rally racing: back in the 1960s the Mini Cooper S caused a sensation by winning the legendary Monte Carlo Rally three times, among other triumphs. The race version of the MINI Countryman – a co-production with partner Prodrive – will be taking its first tests in autumn 2010 and will also be available as a customer car for privateer rally teams.
MINI Scooter E Concept: two wheels, zero emissions, usual MINI style.
The unique potential of MINI not only allows the brand to venture into new vehicle segments, it also underpins the development of totally new mobility concepts. The world premiere of the MINI Scooter E Concept at the 2010 Paris Motor Show spotlights in fascinating style the innovative power of MINI. For the first time, the hallmark MINI driving fun has been distilled into a two-wheel package and combined with a – likewise groundbreaking – vision of emission-free mobility.
The study vehicle betrays its MINI design genealogy in both its proportions and a host of details which leave no doubt as to its family identity. Equally characteristic of MINI is the extensive scope for customisation worked into the concept, and the intelligent functionality inherent in both the cargo and storage concept and the extensive integration of smartphones into the vehicle’s control system.
An electric motor integrated into the rear wheel allows the MINI Scooter E Concept to execute rapid overtaking manoeuvres. The instantaneous pick-up typical of electric drive systems, plus the vehicle’s low weight and compact dimensions, ensure maximum agility on city roads. A lithium-ion battery serves as the energy storage system and can be charged from conventional power sockets using a connecting cable integrated into the MINI Scooter E Concept.

Striking appearance, minimal emissions: the new MINI family.
Carefully targeted design modifications, even more efficient engines and additional innovative equipment features increase both the variety and the appeal of the MINI model range. For instance, the sporting character of the MINI, MINI Clubman and MINI Convertible is now highlighted even more sharply. And under the bonnet, the new-generation petrol engines already in place are now joined by newly developed diesel units to deliver another boost to efficiency. Based on the BMW Group’s drive system expertise, the four-cylinder engines offer a further optimised blend of driving fun and fuel economy. The MINI Cooper D and MINI One D, in particular, have raised their game, posting CO2 emissions of 99 grams per km combined with fuel consumption of 3.8 litres per 100 km (74.3 mpg imp) in the EU test cycle.
The presentation of the new MINI family at the Paris Motor Show includes the world premiere of a further two model variants. The new MINI Cooper D Convertible sees the inimitable driving fun of an open-top MINI now combined with the pulling power and efficiency of a diesel engine. The newly developed four-cylinder diesel unit produces 82 kW/112 hp and accelerates the MINI Cooper D Convertible from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 10.3 seconds. The new model variant records average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 4.0 litres per 100 km (70.6 mpg imp) to go with CO2 emissions of 105 g/km.
The other newcomer to the range is the MINI One D Clubman. The new entry-level diesel engine now also gives the Clubman unsurpassed levels of fuel economy. The new MINI One D Clubman sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 11.8 seconds, burns an average of 3.9 litres of fuel per 100 km (72.4 mpg imp) in the EU test cycle and emits 103 g/km of CO2.

Linking up for more driving fun: MINI Connected.
Among the other innovations presented at the 2010 Paris Motor Show is an all-new and globally unique form of in-car entertainment. MINI Connected heightens the enjoyment of driving by intelligently linking the driver, the MINI and the outside world. MINI is the world’s first car manufacturer to offer – with MINI Connected – a newly developed USB interface with exceptional functionality designed to maximise the integration of the Apple iPhone into the car’s audio and infotainment system. An application available for MINI Connected comprises a web radio function, the use of Google local search and Google Send to Car services, and reception of RSS news feeds. Moreover, it also enables Facebook and Twitter posts to be displayed on the on-board monitor and allows the user to send standardised text messages.
 |
| MINI Connected |
The additional functions integrated into the MINI are activated and operated via the on-board control system. To use the full range of MINI Connected functions, customers need to specify their cars with either the MINI Visual Boost audio system or the MINI navigation system. Both options use a high-resolution colour display in the Centre Speedo and the MINI joystick positioned on the centre console to ensure comfortable, easy and intuitive operation.

MINI takes a new direction…on two wheels. Agyness Deyn unveils MINI Scooter E Concept in London for Global Premiere.
London, UK. Iconic British brand MINI unveils its exciting MINI Scooter E Concept today in London. This new design study represents the MINI design team’s unparalleled expertise in recognising the challenges for mobility in major urban areas, and meeting these challenges with the development of stylish, innovative and sustainable future-focused vehicle concepts. The MINI Scooter E Concept comes almost ten years to the day since the new MINI was first shown at the Paris Motor Show.
Agyness Deyn, model and icon of British fashion and design culture is in the Capital to help debut the MINI Scooter E Concept. She will celebrate the global premiere at a private London location this evening featuring an exclusive DJ set by electropop artist, Little Boots.

There are a total of three interpretations of the MINI Scooter E Concept conceived by Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design: two of which will be shown at the Paris Motor Show next week, while the third concept, inspired by the swinging sixties, the hey day of classic Mini is being shown exclusively in London.
Three MINI Scooter E Concepts.
It’s not just a two-wheeler in MINI Design - this scooter meets the needs of the young urban generation: Spontaneous, flexible, CO2-free mobility. Using a Smartphone as the ignition key, the concept integrates infotainment, communication and navigation systems. The MINI Scooter E Concept is powered by an electric motor which can be recharged at any conventional power socket using an on-board charging cable.
Says Adrian van Hooydonk:
“The MINI Scooter E Concept represents an electric vision of the future as urban mobility takes a new direction by MINI. We are delighted to debut during the London Design Festival and pay homage to our British heritage while also marking a new era for MINI. The MINI Scooter E Concept is true to our brand values of distinctive design, intelligent functionality and customisation and builds further on these characteristics by combining driving pleasure with sustainable technology into the first two-wheel concept of its kind for MINI.”
The new scooter design concept is based on current production vehicles but pushes the creative boundaries. Just as the compact design of the classic MINI, born out of the 1950s oil crisis, symbolised a new reality for modern city driving, the MINI Scooter E Concept is designed for the changing landscape in environmental and urban road traffic conditions, to offer a stylish and emission-free alternative for urban mobility. Set to appeal to a young, ecologically-conscious driver, the MINI Scooter E Concept offers a completely new perspective on the distinctive MINI driving experience while being immediately recognisable as a MINI.
No stranger to two-wheel riding herself, Agness Deyn says of the new MINI Scooter E Concept:
“Living a city life, it is important to get around quickly. I was thrilled to hear that MINI is developing an environmentally-friendly scooter, their reputation in cool design is well-known – I can’t wait to try driving one!”

Unmistakably MINI: an authentic reinterpretation of unique details in three design versions.
Distinctive features include the circular central instrument cluster, the iconic speedometer, the visually prominent indicator lamps in the style of the classic Mini and the chrome trims on the bodywork. In addition the colours and materials all serve as identifiers, making the MINI Scooter E Concept recognisably a MINI at first sight.
The design concepts differ in the number of passengers they carry. The first MINI Scooter E Concept is a two-seater variant developed for ‘the fun of driving for two’. It mirrors the colour scheme of the current MINI E hatch prototype, 40 of which are currently on trial on UK roads - with body paintwork in matt charcoal, a yellow seat and yellow-painted mirror caps - and emphasizes the particularly intense aspect of zero-emission driving.
The second concept is a single-seater and the sportiest of the new concepts. Almost purist in design, this model nods to the British heritage of the brand. Features include a classic combination of an upholstered seat in dark brown leather, paintwork in British Racing Green and silver mirror caps reminiscent of iconic racing cars.
The third and more design-progressive model – being shown exclusively in London – takes inspiration from the popular culture of the 1960s, a decade synonymous with the classic Mini, drawing on the distinctive graphics of the Mod era in particular. The white body colour on this two-seater variant is decorated with numerous applications and stickers, with the left hand mirror cap featuring a MINI logo and the right hand one featuring the red, white and blue cockade of the Royal Air Force. The piece de resistance is a perforated leather seat through which the Union Jack shines.
The Specials:
Smartphone as key, display and central control element.
A snap-in adaptor for a Smartphone allows the driver to use their mobile device as a route finder, music player or as a phone via a wireless Bluetooth interface from the MINI ‘cockpit’. As soon as the rider docks his mobile phone and switches it on, the vehicle is ready to go. A navigation app enables drivers to know where other MINI Scooter E Concept drivers are on the map, similar to social networking systems, to encourage interaction between the MINI Scooter E community. Technology currently in development will mean headlights on the scooters automatically open when they meet on the road.
All you need is a power socket.
The MINI Scooter E Concept is driven by a built-in rear wheel electric motor which is powered by a compact lithium-ion battery. The battery can be plugged into any standard AC power outlet. A display screen clearly indicates to the driver the amount of battery life available: the MINI Scooter E Concept can be charged via a retractable lead in the rear of the Scooter.
MINI Centre Rail – the unique solution with specific accessories .
The study also incorporates an innovative version of the MINI Centre Rail first presented earlier this year in the new MINI Countryman. The unique clip-on mechanism offers a range of options for transporting items that may required before, during or after the journey, for example a helmet, umbrellas, sunglasses and thermos flasks.
With all the fun, sporty design principles and agile handling typical of MINI, the MINI Scooter E Concept is easy to operate and perfect for the challenging traffic conditions of the city. It is a sustainable and fun way to enjoy the MINI driving experience and epitomises urban mobility at its best.

Urban driving fun with zero emissions: The MINI Scooter E Concept
Spontaneous, flexible, CO2-free mobility in the characteristic style of the brand – World-first transfer of that familiar MINI feeling to the two-wheel segment brings alternative drive technology to the attention of lifestyle-led target groups – Innovative vehicle concept marks its world premiere at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.
Munich/Paris. Hardly a year has gone by since the launch of the MINI E, and MINI is at it again, opening up fascinating prospects for urban mobility that reduce CO2 emissions without any compromises on spontaneity and independence. The MINI Scooter E Concept transfers the brand’s hallmark driving fun to the two-wheel segment for the first time. Equally unique features are the link between the scooter’s alternative drive concept and its unmistakable design, intelligent functionality and detailed personalisation options in true MINI style. The MINI Scooter E Concept is powered by an electric motor integrated in the rear wheel. The motor’s lithium-ion battery can be recharged at any conventional power socket using an on-board charging cable. The concept study, which is being launched as a world premiere at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, meets the mobility aspirations of a target group that sets store by premium quality and advanced technology as well as placing sustainability on a par with individual style and an emotional driving experience. The MINI Scooter E Concept also highlights new ways of attracting in particular a young audience to the MINI brand.
Once again, this study by the MINI design team has furnished evidence of a special strength exhibited by the brand: the ability to identify new challenges for mobility in major urban areas at an early stage and to meet those needs with innovative vehicle concepts. 51 years ago, the world’s first concept for a small car focused consistently on efficient use of space and driving fun to create the platform for the classic Mini. The design principles applied to the brand’s forebear all those years ago define the segment for small cars and compacts to this day. As the world’s first premium small car, the MINI has been an unparalleled success following the relaunch of the brand in 2001. More than 1.7 million vehicles have been sold worldwide, providing impressive testimony to the potential even in this segment for generating a desire to embrace a successful combination of driving fun, quality, striking design and individual style.

The design of the MINI Scooter E Concept also incorporates current changes in urban mobility requirements. Its heritage of more than 50 years has seen the MINI brand following the principle of promoting individual mobility with optimum use of space implemented on the smallest possible footprint. This principle is now being applied to the brand’s first two-wheel vehicle, offering seats for up to two people within remarkably compact dimensions. The study also embodies the first two-wheel concept to combine a sustainable drive technology with design features geared to lifestyle.
Typical MINI design – a world first on two wheels.
The MINI Scooter E Concept, making its world debut in two individual design versions, opens up a whole host of options for enjoying the driving fun associated with MINI while at the same time being immediately recognisable as a true ambassador of the brand. This synthesis has been achieved by the systematic transfer of fundamental MINI design principles to the new vehicle concept and through an authentic reinterpretation of unique details. The design language and wealth of individual details embodied in the two-wheel study are based on the current production models of the MINI brand.
Clearly defined proportions and smoothly contoured lines lend the MINI Scooter E Concept an aesthetic appearance that evinces significant parallels to the brand’s cars. The relationship between the size of the wheels and the vehicle as a whole play a significant role here. The 11-inch rims of the MINI Scooter E Concept give the study a powerful and robust appearance, emulating the profile of MINI cars. The alignment of the contours enhances this impression from the side by clearly defining the front and rear of the vehicle before sweeping up towards each other at virtually identical angles. The windshield of the MINI Scooter E Concept is angled in an upright position similar to that of the front windshield in MINI cars. The curvature designed into the sides also displays parallels with the transitions of a windshield in the MINI as it merges into the A-pillars.
Round headlights with independent contour, windshield with an aperture in MINI radiator grille style.
The front view of the MINI Scooter E Concept is dominated by a remarkably large, round headlight unit. Similar to the headlights of the MINI Countryman, the headlight contour diverges slightly from the original circular shape, and both designs are influenced by the geometry of the surrounding surfaces. The independent contour of the headlight unit in the MINI Countryman matches the brawny, curved wheel arches and the robust radiator grille, while on the MINI Scooter E Concept it takes its cue from the low-slung windshield. The headlight unit tapers upwards and features a chrome surround, creating a strong profile in characteristic MINI style. The circular shape of the main headlight interior is highlighted by an illuminated coloured ring.
Projecting indicators, meanwhile, invoke the front view of the classic Mini. The glass covers for the flasher lamps are enclosed in chrome fames and curve slightly outwards to resemble the historic profile.
A stylised aperture in the windshield configured below the headlight contributes to the front profile so typical of the brand, its shape mimicking the contour of the hexagonal radiator grille in MINI cars. This design element also has a chrome frame, while the impression of familiarity is further enhanced by the MINI brand logo above it. The windshield itself is framed by a wraparound plastic surround. Each of the two study versions also has individually matched paintwork for the windshield, wheel covers and fairing enclosing the frame. A contrasting colour is applied to the surface of each of the windshields, and the range of hues in the paintwork reflects the light and shade effects on the curved engine bonnet of a MINI four-wheeler.
Inimitably MINI: chrome elements, round mirrors and two upright tail lights.
Other chrome elements are evident on the hand grip at the back of the seat and on the footrest. The hand grip is shaped like the rear spoiler of the MINI Cooper S, while a continuous band of chrome positioned directly below the seat recalls the side sill on MINI cars.
The rear-view mirrors on the MINI Scooter E Concept likewise display familiar characteristics in their shape and their size in proportion to the vehicle. This applies to the round contour of the mirror surfaces, the eye-catching volume of the hemispherical casing, as well as the different mirror cap designs that permit additional individualisation options.
Another characteristic design feature is reinterpreted at the rear of the MINI Scooter E Concept: the two tail light units are mounted on the outside of the rear wheel fairing in an upright position. A transparent glass cover recalls the MINI Countryman and provides a view of the three-dimensional structure of the tail lights, brake lights and indicators. Each of the tail light units on the MINI Scooter E Concept is mounted in a chrome frame and the MINI logo is positioned between the tail lights.
One concept, two characters.
The exceptional potential of the new mobility concept is underscored by the parallel presentation of two design concepts. These two versions highlight the key features of the study – driving fun, sustainability, sportiness and lifestyle orientation – with an individual focus. The concepts have different functionalities in terms of the number of seats: the MINI Scooter E Concept is presented in a version developed to support driving fun for two people and in an emphatically sporty, thoroughbred version with a seat designed for the rider alone.
The colour design of the two-seater version of the MINI Scooter E Concept is based on the appearance of the MINI E, which highlights its emission-free drive concept in a particularly striking way. The livery designed in matt anthracite creates an attractive contrast with the seat finished in yellow, with the iridescent colour of the windshield around the headlight unit and the yellow mirror caps providing further accentuating features. The surface of the seat is made of tough fabric material, with a yellow strip bordering the lower part of the seat.
In each of the two versions of the MINI Scooter E Concept, this strip sweeps downwards from the front of the seat into the frame fairing and continues along the edge of the footrest towards the front, where it also runs around the windshield. This creates a visual boundary between the body of the scooter and the rider/passenger area including the foot space and cockpit.
The design of the second version of the MINI Scooter E Concept is steeped in the brand’s heritage and British origins. Primarily designed for solo riders, this version represents the sportier version of the new vehicle concept. Its British Racing Green finish harks back to classic racing cars, with the sparkle of the paintwork lending a particularly distinguished, high-quality aura to this new interpretation. The seat is upholstered in dark brown leather and the surface has an artifically created “used look”. Attractive contrasts to the dark-green body colour are provided by silver mirror caps and paintwork around the headlight unit in the windshield that flips between green and silver.
Progressive, stylish, uncomplicated operation.
The MINI Scooter E Concept is a rallying call for spontaneous riding enjoyment. This is fostered by intuitive operation and agile ride characteristics. Thoroughbred mobility in hallmark MINI style entails vehicle handling that is completely intuitive and needs no further explanation. That applies to the immediate activity of riding as well as charging the lithium-ion battery. The operating concept is also directed towards enabling straightforward and effortless use of the other functions designed to enhance driving fun.
This challenge is met by an innovative way of integrating mobile devices. The cockpit of the MINI Scooter E Concept comprises a Centre Speedo in the circular shape familiar from MINI, with a smartphone integrated in the middle. The wraparound speedometer is in the form of a tube filled with fluid, the content expanding in line with the speed rather like a thermometer. In the lower area of the Centre Speedo, a battery charge level display indicates the range currently available. The design of all the control elements for lights, direction indicators and other driving functions corresponds to the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel of MINI cars.
Smartphones as key, display and central control element.
The inside of the round instrument comprises a snap-in adapter for a smartphone, which operates simultaneously as the vehicle key, display and central control element. As soon as the rider docks his mobile phone and switches it on, the vehicle is ready to go. This configuration in the MINI Scooter E Concept yields new initiatives for integrating infotainment, communication and navigation functions in a two-wheeler. While the scooter is in motion, the smartphone can be used as a navigation system, music player or telephone as required. A wireless Bluetooth interface can be connected to a helmet from the MINI Collection. This is fitted with a microphone and headphones so that riders are able to use the telephone function or access their personal music collection while on the road.
The innovative operating concept creates a network between the rider, the vehicle and the environment which paves the way for numerous new interactive functions. Building on the MINI Connected services already available in current MINI production cars, specific features can be implemented by adding further smartphone applications. For example, the navigation function can be supplemented by a special map view in Google Maps which indicates the current position of other scooters from the brand in the immediate vicinity. This provides a feature similar to social networks on the internet where riders who are friends can be identified and invited to come together on a whim by simply pressing a button. A greeting function has also been developed for the MINI Scooter E Concept to further strengthen the community appeal and highlight the friendly and open-minded personality of this vehicle. An automated full-beam headlight function that operates when two vehicles meet strengthens this sense of community.
MINI Centre Rail in an innovative design and with specific accessories.
Alongside the intuitive control and interactive functions, the advanced functionality of the MINI Scooter E Concept also contributes to its intuitive and compelling operation. Two compartments on the inside of the windshield are available for stowing personal items. The study also incorporates an innovative aluminium design of the MINI Centre Rail first presented in the MINI Countryman. The mounting rail configured inside the windshield extends downwards into the foot space, and the unique clip-on mechanism offers a range of options for transporting items that are required during the journey or at the rider’s destination. These items are stored so that they easily come to hand.
Dedicated Centre Rail specifications are offered for each version of the concept. The universal mounting system means that they can be switched between vehicles at any time or complemented by other products from the MINI Accessories range for the MINI Countryman. The accessories for the Centre Rail include tailor-made holders from the MINI Collection for the helmet as well as for umbrellas, sunglasses and thermos flasks. An additional closed compartment and an expanded rain guard to protect the rider’s legs can also be easily connected to the Centre Rail. A music player, calendar, stopwatch and tea cups specially designed for the MINI Scooter E Concept can also be attached to the Centre Rail.
All you need is a power socket: maximum independence guaranteed by an integrated charging cable.
When riding the MINI Scooter E Concept, brief stops can be used to top up the on-board energy storage system. Consistent charging significantly increases independence and flexibility when using the electrically powered two-wheeler. The electric drive unit, concealed beneath a painted cover inside the rear wheel, is powered by electricity supplied from a lithium-ion battery. Apart from the compact battery, a charging system and connecting cable are integrated snugly in the rear of the MINI Scooter E Concept. The charging cable has a plug which fits into any conventional domestic socket. This has the major advantage that topping up the energy reserve does not depend on a special charging station being available. Stop-offs for shopping or visiting a café can be used for hassle-free battery recharging.
Plugs and cables are accommodated underneath a cover similar to the round tank flap in a MINI car. After opening the illuminated flap, the plug and charging cable can be pulled out to a length of up to five metres and connected to the power system. After the battery has been charged up, a button-operated spring mechanism ensures that the cable is retracted and coiled in a space-saving compartment.
MINI Scooter E Concept: innovative, sustainable, lifestyle-oriented – in other words, a true MINI.
Urban driving fun enters a new dimension with the MINI Scooter E Concept. This innovative mobility concept embodies a combination of sustainability and lifestyle unprecedented in the two-wheel segment. Both facets are showcased particularly convincingly by the MINI brand. A period spanning more than 50 years has seen this brand representing leading-edge vehicle concepts that encompass environmental and economic aspects while satisfying the desire for spontaneous driving fun and individual style. In its time, the classic Mini became the icon of a new kind of mouldbreaking mobility in modern urban environments. The MINI Scooter E Concept similarly delivers alternative solutions for the shifting requirements in today’s urban traffic landscape. Its design in typical MINI style incorporates a pioneering operating concept and comprehensive options for creating a personalised vehicle, taking account of the sophisticated requirements of young, environmentally aware target groups who are open to new trends.
The MINI Scooter E Concept represents the first mobility concept in this vehicle segment to bring sustainability and lifestyle into harmony. The MINI Scooter E Concept represents a means of conveyance that is as classless as the classic Mini in its time. Easy operation and agile handling offer ideal conditions for giving young drivers a fascinating entry into the world of the MINI brand. At the same time, the concept will appeal to style-conscious and environmentally aware car drivers who are interested in an attractive adjunct or a longer-term alternative to their accustomed form of personal mobility.
The drive concept incorporated in the study also underpins the consistent development efforts of the BMW Group in its quest to achieve CO2-free mobility. The electric drive plays a key role in this endeavour and allows the MINI Scooter E Concept to deliver the driving fun associated with the brand in a new and highly contemporary package. The instantaneous pick-up of electric drive systems, plus the vehicle’s low weight and compact dimensions, ensure maximum agility in typical traffic conditions on urban roads. These features and the simple operation of the charging system make the MINI Scooter E Concept a pioneering symbol of independent, flexible and spontaneous mobility.

More youthful, more attractive....
Vines MINI News
More youthful, more attractive, more diverse: MINI builds on its supremacy in the premium small car segment.
Model range fully revised and expanded – Market launch of the new MINI family and MINI Countryman on 18 September 2010 – Unique and typically MINI: four models, up to seven engine variants, 51 years of tradition and virtually endless scope for customisation.
With the presentation of the latest and most wide-ranging model line-up since its relaunch in 2001, the MINI brand is beginning a new chapter in its successful history as the originator of the premium small car segment. The market introduction of the new MINI family will be joined on 18 September 2010 by the sales launch of the brand’s fourth model, the MINI Countryman. The updated versions of the MINI, MINI Clubman and MINI Convertible cut a more stylish figure than ever, boast unsurpassed agility and achieve even higher levels of efficiency than before. With its four doors and large tailgate, extra space and – as an option – all-wheel drive, the MINI Countryman delivers totally new ways of experiencing the driving fun typical of the brand.
All of which takes the diversity of the MINI model range into a new dimension. For example, the MINI can now be ordered with a choice of five petrol and two diesel engines developing between 55 kW/75 hp and 155 kW/211 hp. Three petrol units and two diesel variants are available for the MINI Countryman, and two of the engines can also be combined with the MINI ALL4 all-wheel-drive system. Meanwhile, the further extended range of optional extras and the selection of exterior paint finishes, interior colours, upholstery variants, trim elements and Colour Lines – which allow every MINI to become a personally configured one-off – set new standards in the segment once again.
In the tenth year since the brand was relaunched, MINI has been able to further strengthen its position as the original premium small car. MINI broke new ground as the first ever maker of premium small cars, and its lasting impact can be seen in the current trends in this segment of the market. The underlying principle that helps give every MINI its authentic character is still unique. MINI remains the only maker of premium small cars whose models are based on independently developed concepts exclusive to the brand. The stand-alone identity of the MINI defines both the charisma and product substance of all MINI models, constituting a major factor in the success of the brand – as reflected by global sales of more than 1.7 million cars since 2001.
The new MINI family: expressive, agile and more efficient than ever.
New engines, a cleverly modified design and additional innovative equipment features enhance the appeal of the MINI, MINI Clubman and MINI Convertible. The appearance of all the members of the new MINI family expresses their sporting character more strikingly than ever, while under the bonnet, the new-generation petrol engines already in place are now joined by all-new diesel units to deliver another boost to efficiency.
The new MINI family includes two new variants from launch. Fans of open-top MINI motoring can now enjoy the pulling power and efficiency of a diesel engine as well. The newly developed 82 kW/112 hp four-cylinder diesel unit in the new MINI Cooper D Convertible produces powerful mid-range sprints and acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 10.3 seconds.
A total of eight model variants are available for the MINI alone, all of which meet the EU5 exhaust standard and use an extensive, model-specific combination of MINIMALISM technology – such as the Auto Start/Stop function, Shift Point Display, Brake Energy Regeneration and electromechanical power steering – to deliver an exceptionally fine balance of driving fun and fuel consumption. The MINI One MINIMALIST, available in two variants, has the lowest fuel consumption and emissions of all the petrol-engine models. It can be ordered with output of either 55 kW/75 hp or 72 kW/98 hp, both options claiming average fuel consumption of 5.1 litres per 100 km (55.4 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 119 g/km. The MINI Clubman can be ordered in five variants and the MINI Convertible in four versions. In addition, customers also have the option of the three extremely sporty versions of the MINI from the John Cooper Works brand. The MINI John Cooper Works, MINI John Cooper Works Clubman and MINI John Cooper Works Convertible are all powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, which has a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection and develops 155 kW/211 hp. MINI can therefore offer customers seeking a sharp-edged motorsport-style experience at the wheel a range of models unmatched in the small car segment.
The MINI Countryman: more space, optimised traction and new possibilities.
The latest evidence of the brand’s extraordinary potential comes with the launch of the MINI Countryman. For the first time, a MINI can boast four doors and a large tailgate, as well as a versatile interior offering space for up to five occupants. Added to which, the MINI Countryman is the brand’s first model with a body measuring over four metres and which can be equipped with ALL4 all-wheel drive as an option. The MINI Countryman is also the world’s first and only premium car of its kind. The crossover model’s wide range of qualities allows it to cross the boundaries of urban mobility to take the trademark MINI feeling into new dimensions and win over additional target groups.
From the first glance, the MINI Countryman strikes you as unique, powerful, robust and versatile. Equally eye-catching are its hallmark brand design elements and proportions. This combination allows the brand’s fourth model to bridge the gap between the classical concept of the MINI and a cutting-edge Sports Activity Vehicle. The driving characteristics of the MINI Countryman also betray its family roots. Like all the brand’s models, the Countryman has the most agile handling in its segment. Its high-class chassis technology and precise yet efficient electromechanical power steering deliver the familiar MINI go-kart feeling, which is given a new angle by the raised seating position and optional ALL4 all-wheel-drive system. Technology including the standard-fitted Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system ensures the MINI Countryman has unbeatable active safety.
The MINI Countryman is available from launch with three petrol and two diesel engines. The selection of petrol variants ranges from the MINI One Countryman with 72 kW/98 hp and MINI Cooper Countryman developing 90 kW/122 hp, through to the 135 kW/184 hp MINI Cooper S Countryman, whose 1.6-litre four-cylinder powerplant is the most efficient engine in its displacement class. The petrol models are joined in the line-up by the MINI Cooper D Countryman (82 kW/112 hp) and MINI One D Countryman (66 kW/90 hp) diesel variants. The ALL4 all-wheel-drive system is available for the MINI Cooper S Countryman and MINI Cooper D Countryman. All models meet the EU5 exhaust gas standard.
Top-class individualisation: new colours and trim elements, innovative equipment details and clever solutions from the accessories range.
Every MINI is built according to individual customer specification. The extraordinary wealth of model variants offers extensive potential for detailed configurations in keeping with the customer’s personal style. The market launch of the new MINI family and MINI Countryman brings with it further additions to the selection of exterior paint finishes, roof/soft-top colours, alloy wheels, upholstery options and interior variations, as well as an even more extensive range of optional extras and accessories.
Both the MINI, MINI Clubman and MINI Convertible and the MINI Countryman are now all also available with Adaptive Headlights in conjunction with the optional xenon units. This technology adjusts the beam angle of the headlights to the path of each corner by tracking the steering angle of the car. Meanwhile, high-quality audio and navigation systems enhance driving pleasure and comfort both in urban traffic conditions and on journeys beyond the city limits.
In place of a conventional centre console, the MINI Countryman also comes with an innovative rail system between the seats: the unique MINI Centre Rail allows personal items to be kept within reach at all times when on the move. Storage compartments and brackets can be securely fixed to the rail with the help of a specially developed clip-in attachment system. Added to which, the MINI Centre Rail creates a visual and functional connection between the front and rear seats.
Exceptional integration capability: MINI Connected is launched.
The innovative functions of MINI Connected enable the entertainment and communications equipment in all MINI models to set new standards. MINI Connected enhances driving pleasure through the intelligent link-up of the driver, his MINI and the outside world. MINI is the world’s first car manufacturer to offer, as part of its MINI Connected concept, a newly developed USB interface which uses its unparalleled range of functionality to maximise the integration of the Apple iPhone into the car’s audio and infotainment system. An application available for MINI Connected comprises a web radio function, the use of Google local search and Google Send to Car services, as well as reception of RSS news feeds. It also enables Facebook and Twitter posts to be displayed on the on-board monitor and allows the user to send standardised text messages.
Another special feature which fits right in with the MINI style is the Mission Control function. This system analyses a host of signals relating to the vehicle itself, the driving situation and the vehicle’s surroundings to supply the driver with relevant information and advice – all generated in dialogue form. These dialogues are based, among other things, on information regarding safety and comfort settings. They request that the driver and passengers buckle up their seatbelts, for example, and instruct them on the use of the air conditioning system. They also incorporate up-to-date information on driving conditions and the current status of the vehicle – such as outside temperature and the amount of fuel in the tank.
The additional functions integrated into the MINI are activated and operated via the on-board control system. To use the full range of MINI Connected functions, customers need to specify their cars with either the MINI Visual Boost radio or the MINI navigation system. Both options use a high-resolution colour display in the Centre Speedo and the MINI joystick positioned on the centre console to ensure comfortable, easy and intuitive operation.
Tradition breeds innovation and underpins that captivating MINI feeling.
Driving fun and efficiency, characteristic design and individual style, quality and advanced technology form the basis for that unmistakable MINI feeling. In addition, identification with the history of the brand – which stretches back to 1959 – also contributes to the authentic character of MINI models, which has captivated people around the world. Its British heritage, underlying design principles and status as a car for all social classes forge a link between the current models and the classic Mini. The fresh interpretation of classic design elements accurately showcases their shared qualities.
The development of the classic Mini saw a rigorous commitment to the efficient use of space and the innovative arrangement of the drive components spawn a small car concept that was revolutionary at the time and is still regarded as pioneering today. Its practical and economic virtues, host of clever details and, more than anything, its agile handling earned the compact four-seater legendary status not only in its native Britain, but around the world.
For the relaunch of the brand the designers took the most important features of the original Mini design and tweaked them for the new MINI to meet the demands of personal mobility in the 21st century. Front-wheel drive, engines mounted transversely at the front, short body overhangs and a low centre of gravity have marked out the original member of the small car segment throughout its history. Sophisticated drive and chassis technology, uncompromising quality and individual style ensured the MINI was the first premium model in its class. And innovation rooted in tradition ensures the brand’s cars remain as unique today as they have always been.

THE MINI COUNTRYMAN IS HERE.
If you thought the MINI was for those looking for a compact nippy little run around, you’d be right. But that was until a new kid on the street drove into town, the new MINI Countryman. A MINI that displays all the desirable qualities of its thrill-seeking sportier siblings, but also offers the space of a family saloon.
This is the fourth member of the MINI family – the first ever four door, five seat MINI and even comes with optional four wheel drive. At over four metres long this is the largest MINI EVER! The additional space and versatility offered by the MINI Countryman is immense, yet its design ensures it remains very much an authentic MINI.
Not only does the MINI Countryman have four doors, and comfortably seat five adults, it has more than enough boot space for sports equipment, buggies or a medium-sized polar bear, for those planning a trip to the Arctic. The additional space offered by the MINI Countryman opens it up to a world of outdoor pursuits and more regular trips away with friends or children, whilst still having room for the luggage.
Along with its flexible, spacious interior, the MINI Countryman has a new, dynamic outer. With familiar MINI features and go-kart handling, it offers the same driving excitement that you would expect from MINI. Powered by a choice of three petrol and two diesel engines, the MINI Countryman’s technological wizardry safeguards MINI’s reputation for fuel-sipping performance and surprisingly low CO2 emissions.
Take a closer look inside the MINI Countryman and there are a few unique features that will have your inquisitive side doing somersaults. Ambient mood lighting runs throughout, and the rear seats slide to allow extra boot space or more leg room for your vertically gifted passengers.
A larger MINI provides more space to customise. With the biggest variety of colours, including new Crystal Silver, Surf Blue and Light Coffee, trims and interiors, it’s easy to customise the MINI Countryman to suit every personality.

MINI Countryman in Full Flow

MINI Countryman in full flow
MINI will release an innovative TV spot produced with cutting-edge film technology in September as part of its launch campaign for the new MINI Countryman. Under the campaign motto “MINI Countryman. Getaway”, this impressive piece of cinema showcases the versatility of the vehicle concept, and takes the viewer on a ride through the heart of Milan and around Lake Como. The MINI Countryman’s journey along every imaginable route is quite an adventure...
The new MINI Countryman commercial breaks the mould for traditional film advertising. New high-tech film technology mixes real cars with computer-generated images to produce unique, previously unseen effects.
The commercial was filmed in collaboration with well-known American director, Brian Beletic, and Sway Studios of Los Angeles, on location in Italy. The creative agency was BSUR, Amsterdam.
Print campaign
The MINI Countryman is also taking a new approach when it comes to print advertising. The focus here is on the “getaway” from the city to the country. These ads take MINI’s signature “look and feel” to the next level: The solid black backgrounds used in the past have been broken up to create a new dimension and “light boxes” added to make headlines stand out in 3D.
