The changes introduced for the MINI, MINI Clubman and MINI Convertible underpin both the unique premium character of the brand and the leading position in the marketplace of each individual model in terms of driving fun and efficiency. The range of typically MINI customisation options available for the cars – which are each built precisely according to customer specifications – is more appealing and extensive than ever.

The global market launch on 18 September 2010 will see a brace of all-new diesel engines joining the portfolio alongside the extensively upgraded petrol engines already available for the MINI, MINI Clubman and MINI Convertible. The four-cylinder diesel units stand out with their greater pulling power, efficiency and smoothness – qualities developed on the back of the BMW Group’s outstanding expertise in the field of engine development. Added to which, far-reaching MINIMALISM technology helps to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The new MINI One D (66 kW/90 hp) and new MINI Cooper D (82 kW/112 hp) set a new benchmark in efficiency with average fuel consumption of 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres (74.3 mpg imp) in the EU5 test cycle and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km. The variety within the model range is broadened further by the new MINI One D Clubman and the new MINI Cooper D Convertible, the first ever open-top MINI with a diesel engine.

The modified design of the MINI, MINI Clubman and MINI Convertible accurately showcases the increased sporting potential of the three models through a number of details. At the same time, a selection of clever touches, together with new wheel variants, paint finishes and optional extras, accentuate both the elegance and premium character of the MINI family. The new geometry of the front bumper on each model allows them to meet increasingly stringent pedestrian protection requirements even more effectively. All models come with LEDs for the rear lights and brake lights, as well as the dynamic brake light function.
Inside the cars, the newly designed controls for the audio and air conditioning systems ensure optimised functionality and ergonomics. The cutting-edge exclusivity of the interior is further underlined by extremely harmonious colours and high-quality materials. The model-specific selection of seat upholstery, trim elements and Colour Lines has also been extensively updated.

An array of new exterior paint finishes and wheel designs is available for the MINI, MINI Clubman and MINI Convertible to complement their refreshed styling. Chili Red is now available – exclusively for the MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman – as a contrast colour for the roof and exterior mirror caps. Meanwhile, three “design worlds” – Rally, Classic and Scene – have been introduced to underpin configurations tailored to the customer’s personal style. Each comprises a carefully coordinated combination of body paint finish, roof colour, wheel design, upholstery, trim elements, Colour Line and other visual features. The design worlds represent a recommendation from the MINI design team and lend the car an extremely coherent character. Additional – and almost limitless – customisation can be achieved by varying the individual components of each design world and by adding further equipment items and accessories to the mix.

All models come with innovative equipment features aimed at enhancing comfort, safety and the trademark MINI personality. For example, the optional xenon headlights can be ordered with black headlight reflectors or the Adaptive Headlights function, while an automatic dimming function is available for both the rear-view and exterior mirrors, and the optional ambient lighting uses a trio of LEDs to provide a broad spectrum of colour. The MINI Clubman is now fitted with a new retractable roller-type luggage compartment cover.

The new audio and navigation systems and the integration devices for external music players and mobile phones both offer top-class entertainment and communications capability. All the radio systems come with an MP3-compatible CD player and an AUX IN connection, while the MINI Visual Boost radio and MINI navigation system team up with a high-resolution colour display in the Centre Speedo and a Bluetooth hands-free system complete with USB audio interface. This allows video files stored on a compatible Apple iPod to be viewed on the on-board monitor. If the customer has ordered their car with the Bluetooth mobile phone preparation including USB interface, both systems can be hooked up with compatible mobile devices to allow functions such as audio streaming via Bluetooth, album cover artwork display and innovative office functions.

The MINI Countryman in its typical way of being wears the popular and individually created hardhat and mixes up with the soccer fans in South Africa. If you believed the Vuvuzela had been the craziest South African fan article, you were wrong! Next to the famous plastic-trumpet, the Makarapa is the top-football-item in South Africa.
For those not familiar with this design innovation, a Makarapa is a workman’s safety helmet that has been completely remodelled and customised according to the individual tastes of the football supporter wearing it. Each handcrafted, colourfully painted headdress is worn with pride and becomes an artwork in its own right.
Makarapa literally translated means ‘Migrant Worker’ and gains its origin from the safety helmets worn by the migrant labourers working in the gold mines of Johannesburg.
In short, the story goes that in 1979 – the year MINI turned 20 – Alfred Boloyi was in the stands watching a football match when a friend was hit on the head by a flying bottle. For protection, Alfred wore a workman’s helmet to the next game, which he painted in the colours of his team. The headgear was an instant hit.
From humble beginnings – just like MINI – the Makarapa has grown into a style institution: unique, quirky and an extension of its owner’s individual personality. The “true” combination of a crazy South African football style does not only consist of the much sought Vuvuzelas, indeed the exotically created Makarapas can be added. So it is obvious that MINI follows this style and creates its own Makarapa-design in South Africa.

In the new MINI petrol power plants measures such as reducing friction and improving heat management in the engines have enabled further improvements in efficiency. Together with such innovations as a map-controlled oil pump, electromechanical power steering and an optimised coolant pump, all the new petrol engines ensure extremely efficient use of energy.
The ultimate incarnation of MINIMALISM is found in the new MINI One MINIMALIST. Using the new engine technology, Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start Stop function, Shift Point Display and other MINIMALISM measures it has the lowest emissions values of any petrol-engined MINI - a CO2 figure of 119 g/km.

Munich/Vienna. This year marks the tenth consecutive involvement on the part of MINI in Europe’s biggest charity event in support of HIV/AIDS. The 18th Life Ball takes place in Vienna on 17th July 2010 and will once again be a hot spot for the international celebrity set. This flamboyant and extrovert event flies the flag for tolerance and solidarity. For MINI it provides an ideal platform on which to showcase its social-political commitment.
Since 2001, one of the chief protagonists at the Life Ball has been a MINI created by a fashion designer. This year for the first time, three different MINI models will be embellished by a trio of world-renowned names from the world of fashion. On behalf of America's Calvin Klein, his creative director Francisco Costa will be designing the MINI Countryman, the brand's new crossover model. The US fashion designer with Belgian roots Diane von Furstenberg, meanwhile, will add her artistic touch to a MINI Hatch, while New York’s Kenneth Cole will imprint his unmistakable style on a MINI Convertible. These exclusive collector’s items are to be auctioned on behalf of the charity supported by the Life Ball, the proceeds going to amfAR (the Foundation for AIDS Research).
The previous Life Ball MINIs have never failed to thrill with their outré designs. Indeed, their history reads like a Who’s Who of the fashion industry: Missoni (2003), Ferré (2004), Versace (2005), Diesel (2006), Mario Testino (2007), Agent Provocateur (2008) and, last year, The Blonds for Katy Perry. Proceeds now total around EUR 500,000.
Life Ball 2010
This year’s Life Ball will take place against a rather special backdrop, being held to tie in with the 18th International AIDS Conference that starts in Vienna the day after the big event. On 17th July, in addition to Vienna’s City Hall and City Hall Square, the Burgtheater with its Red Ribbon Cotillion Summer Ball and even the Austrian Parliament – which hosts the amfAR Gala – will be dedicated to the red ribbon cause.
Based on this year’s motto “Sow the Seeds of Solidarity!” and the “Earth” theme, the 2010 Life Ball will be planting its seeds around the world wherever there is a real need.
The social commitment of the BMW Group.Worldwide measures to combat HIV/AIDS are one of the main elements of the corporate and social policy pursued by the BMW Group. The company’s involvement in South Africa is particularly wide-ranging, covering a comprehensive workplace programme for employees and their families, plus a number of different projects in the local communities and further afield. The carmaker is also committed to fighting this pandemic in other affected countries, such as Thailand or China. Membership of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBC) underlines its long-term commitment at its various locations.

London. Last night, against the back-drop of the metropolis’ skyline and in amongst the green fields of Mudchute Farm in London, celebrations for the launch of the new MINI Countryman culminated in world-exclusive performances by megastar producer, Timbaland and U.S. country singer Michelle Branch at the ‘MINI Countryman Open Air’ event. Their single ‘Getaway’ – which received its first-ever live outing in front of a 500-strong audience including Eva Herzigova, Cat Deeley, Margherita Missoni, Jade Parfitt, Poppy Delevigne, Donna Air, Henry Holland, Jasmine Guinness, Tyrone Woods, Ben Grimes, Jack Kidd, Ozwald Boateng and Hofit Golan - is set to be released this summer by Warner Music.
The collaboration between one of the world’s most prolific artist/producers and a U.S. country singer songwriter merged the ‘URBAN meets COUNTRY’ themes associated with the new MINI Countryman. From on-site graffiti artists to VIP guests wandering around in wellies and Henry Holland “House of Holland” T-shirt-clad crew, the ‘MINI Countryman Open Air’ fully lived up to the brand’s quirky spirit. Warm-up acts came in the form of ‘folktronica’ musician James Yuil and Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard spinning the wheels for the lively crowd before George Lamb brought on-stage Michelle Branch for her showcase of stellar pop-tinged modern country. As well as the exclusive MINI Countryman song ‘Getaway’ making its world debut in London, the MINI Countryman also had a starring role in the world exclusive preview for the track’s music video.

Closing the night’s exciting mini festival, Timbaland rocked everyone outdoors with his best known tracks including “Sexy Back” and “Promiscuous Girl.”
The MINI Countryman launches in September 2010. This new MINI not only represents a genuine cross-over in terms of car design – it is MINI’s biggest and first-ever four door car - its increased length and option of all-wheel drive will suit those living the Urban-Country lifestyle, providing the perfect solution for getting around town during the week and with enough room for family trips away at the weekend.
